Hola Mohalla is a major Sikh festival celebrated annually in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. It was started by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1701 as a way to showcase Sikh martial prowess and spirit. The festival typically takes place the day after Holi and lasts for three days.




Key Highlights of Hola Mohalla in Anandpur Sahib:

  1. Martial Displays:
    The Nihang Sikhs, a warrior sect, demonstrate their skills in mock battles, horse riding, sword fighting, and Gatka (Sikh martial art).

  2. Religious Processions:
    A grand procession featuring Nihangs on horses and elephants, carrying traditional weapons, moves through the town with kirtan (devotional singing) and chanting of hymns.

  3. Langars (Community Kitchens):
    Free food is served by volunteers across the town, upholding the Sikh tradition of seva (selfless service).

  4. Kirtan & Katha:
    Spiritual discourses, Gurbani recitations, and kirtan are held in Gurdwaras, especially at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, one of the five Sikh Takhts.

  5. Outdoor Activities:
    Events like tent pegging, sword displays, and archery reflect the martial heritage of the Sikhs.

  6. Large Gatherings:
    Thousands of devotees from across India and abroad visit Anandpur Sahib for the festival.



Historical Significance: 




Guru Gobind Singh Ji established Hola Mohalla as a response to the Hindu festival of Holi, transforming it into a festival of valor and discipline. It was meant to prepare Sikhs for self-defense and warfare.

In english 2025, Hola Mohalla will be celebrated from March 15 to March 17.
